I found the Tasting Room Manager, Melissa, very knowledgeable and friendly, in fact all the staff in the tasting room was just amazing. They were all very helpful and so accommodating.

Even though the Tasting Room was full you never felt neglected or rushed, as is sometimes the case at a few Tasting Rooms when they get busy. Not here, you were allowed to enjoy whichever wines they poured for you and were happy to answer any questions one might have.

First up was the:

Marianne Rosé 2014
Marianne Rosé 2014

Marianne Rosé 2014 – a light and easy drinking wine. Could be classified as dry, but none us is thought it was dry at all. The wine was liked by all 6 guest, so a definite contender.

Winemakers Notes – Soft pink in colour, this wine has intense strawberry flavours backed by tart and uplifting citrus. The wine shows great structure with fresh acidity and lingering after taste. This wine is perfect to drink on its own as an aperitif or together with an al fresco luncheon.

Marianne Sauvignon Blanc 2013
Marianne Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Marianne Sauvignon Blanc 2013 – Being a younger wine, this wine was quiet crisp. Definite passion fruit on the noise, but totally different once you taste it, the wooded oak come’s through on the taste. Mixed reviews on this one, you either loved it or you didn’t.

Winemakers Notes – We have come to refer to this atypical Sauvignon Blanc as the un- Sauvignon, such is the departure in style from a classic Cape Sauvignon. This wine is bursting tropical fruit aromas, most notably passion fruit and beautiful citrus and floral elements. The palate is structured, rounded and elegant demonstrating great fruit balanced by crisp minerality.

Then came the time for the three Estates red’s paired with three Biltong:

The Tasting Room has paired up the following:

Marianne Pinotage 2008 + Springbok Biltong

Marianne Shiraz 2009 + Kudu Biltong

Marianne Desirade 2004 + Beef Biltong

The idea was to taste the wine on its own and then with the biltong, but we had to try the wine with all the biltong as we all have different palates, likes and dislikes.

  1. Marianne Pinotage 2008 + Springbok Biltong

The wine is deliciously smooth, clearly it ages well. Everyone thought this was a good pairing and the wine was well liked by our group.

Winemakers Notes – Deep ruby-red in colour, this wine has a deep nose with aromas of dark fruits, currants, and mint. Intense and complex on the palate with fruit flavours of plum and red cherry. Flavours are well-balanced and give a long-lasting fruity finish. The wine is perfect to drink now yet could mature well within the bottle for a further 5 years.

2. Marianne Shiraz 2009 + Kudu Biltong

Marianne Shiraz 2009
Marianne Shiraz 2009

A rich, spicy, smooth wine. My favourite wine of the day for sure. My pairing of the dayJ.

Winemakers Notes – Elegant and rich, the 2009 edition of our Shiraz exhibits a restrained nose of truffle black spice and dark fruit. Solid tannins are backed by supple red fruit on the palate for balance. This wine will evolve in the bottle to reach perfect drinkability from 2014 onward.

Awards

Silver Michelangelo International Wine Awards 2013

3. Marianne Desirade 2004 + Beef Biltong

Marianne Desirade 2004
Marianne Desirade 2004

The clear winning wine and pairing of the day. Loved by 5 out of the 6 guests at our table.

Winemakers Notes – A full-bodied, bold red with aromas of plums, blackberries and a hint of ripe liquorice. On the palate, there is an explosion of fruit and the harmonious integration of fruit, oak and tannin is evident. This wine is perfect to drink now however its flavour and tannin profile mean it could mature well in the bottle for a further 7 years.

Awards

Gold Medal – Veritas 2012

Silver Michelangelo International Wine Award 2008.

We had so much fun and just didn’t want to fun to end and ordered a Marianne Picnic, deliciousness in a basket. Warm Breads, Hummus, Pâté, Feta Balls, and Labnah, all just too yummy to mention. The complimentary wine of the day for our table was just an added bonus.
