Foxcroft – Restaurant & Bakery

IMG_4676

Once again we found ourselves at Foxcroft, possibly our 5th or 6th visit, since it opened. We happy to report things are still as beautiful and tasty as before.

Our waiter as usual was very knowledgeable and the wait staff patiently explained every dish to us.

I must admit the dishes really looked too good to eat at times, but we manage to polish off every plate.

This time round we didn’t order the Oysters or Charcuterie but it being a week night we thought 5 dishes per person should be sufficient and we were correct 🙂

Paranga Restaurant – Winter Set Menu

Situated in Camps Bay, it’s the perfect setting to view the stunning Cape Town sunset. Part of the Kove Collection of Restaurants, we were excited to see what this one had to offer, having visited some of the other restaurants in the group before.

Guests have a choice of either outside or inside seating but from wherever you are seated you will always have a view of the beautiful deep blue sea.

This evening we had the pleasure of enjoying their 3 course Set Winter Menu.

 *-*

 Mains

Grilled Line Fish – Shallots, Garlic, Thyme, Olives, Heirloom Tomatoes, Clams, Baby New Potatoes & Roast Baby Fennel

Tiramisu – Coffee Mousse, Fudge, Coffee Crumble & Coffee Ice Cream

 *-*

We would recommend any of the Starters they were all very good and substantial in size. The Mussels are excellent value for money. If you love Spicy then the Spicy Chicken Livers is for you. The Popcorn added another dimension to the Sweetcorn velouté which I loved.

As far as mains go the Grilled Line fish which was Kabeljou was really good. The Oxtail was cooked to perfection pity the cauliflower purée packed no punch and the cauliflower chips were non-existent. The Butternut Risotto was a bit stodgy, as I am a bit of a risotto enthusiast, I always gravitate towards it should it appear on any menu. I was a bit disappointed. Unfortunately the Chicken was quite tough and overcooked. We alerted the waitress and the manager did offer a complimentary Dom Pedro.

Our ending didn’t go much better, the Tiramisu, which we all were so looking forward to, was off to our mind, but the Panna Cotta and Chocolate Tart went down a treat.

The Cocktails were also quite good, so some hits and some miss’s, but as usual a good time was had by all.

Panama Jacks & Wikideals SA

The inspired rustic facade of Panama Jacks made it seem as if the restaurant originated from under the sea – fitting for the type of food served. Panama Jacks is a lot more than what meets the eye although the upkeep doesn’t convey the pearl inside.

Similar to Ariel from The Little Mermaid, who found unexpected delights and treasures in sunken ships, we dove into Panama Jacks without an inkling to guide us. If our sense of adventure didn’t kick in, we wouldn’t have explored the tastes on offer. What a great fate we stepped in.

IMG_4112

A variety of flags hung from the ceiling and the simplistic interior decor was mirrored by the diverse range and flavours of seafood.

IMG_4114

We started out with a medley of sushi which like the decorative flags, was in abundance. The platters included Salmon Roses, Nigiri, Makimono, California Rolls and much more. Of each type of sushi, the common and evident impression was of the freshness and taste was to be savoured.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

With all the hustle and bustle around us,we decided to have something off the A la Carte Menu and see what all the fuss was about we opted for the Butter Prawns , the Prawn Saganaki, both went down an absolute treat.

Warmed by the spices and taste of the previous dishes, we indulged in desserts of a creamy Banoffee Pie and a rich Chocolate Volcano. Both desserts were sweet on but the cream and ice cream cut brought a welcome relief to the Banoffee Pie and Chocolate Volcano respectively. The desserts were certainly a sweet and welcome end to the night.

Like any fisherman knows, at the end of a fishing line is always a hook and there was assuredly a “hoekie “for takeaways  – whether it was for show or was operational,we remain unsure.

Regardless, the unexpected conclusion of the night was that given the chance, we would once again sail to Panama Jacks.

Zenith Sky Bar – Cape Royale Hotel

Situated on the rooftop of the elegant Cape Royal Hotel in Greenpoint, you’ll find the trendy Zenith Sky Bar.

IMG_4206

Part of the Long Runners restaurant group, Zenith Sky Bar offers, wine, cocktails and delicious Sushi & the lightest Dim Sum you’ll ever taste.

It offers a 360° view of the most beautiful city in world, of course we just a little bit bias, but you have to agree that’s just what Cape Town is. We have it on good authority that the Sunsets are the best viewed from this vantage point,on a good day you might get the Sunset and Moon raising at the same time and we’ll definitely be back to experience that.

Wikideals voucher in hand, we headed up to the top floor to enjoy our Gourmet Sushi Experience, Asian Dumplings & Bottle of Wine.

The total deal is worth R550 but with the Wikideals it cost’s you only R275.

Your R275 gets you:

Starter: Chicken or vegetable starter dumplings

Gourmet Sushi Platter:

4 Piece Salmon roses

8 Piece Prawn California rolls

8 Piece Salmon fashion sandwich

2 Piece Nigiri

4 Piece Veg Maki

Wine: 1 x Bottle of house wine

*-*

Starter: Chicken or vegetable starter dumplings

Gourmet 32 piece Sushi Platter

Now, whilst the Dumpling’s were definitely the best we’ve had, and the Sushi was excellent and enough for two, the wine of the day, even on a chilly Autumn’s day was stunning. The Miller’s Mile Chenin Blanc/Chardonnay 2017 from Klein Parys Vineyards perfectly suited the entire meal and would do perfectly well on a warm Summer’s day too.

The name Miller’s Mile originates from Kosie Möller (the Möller ancestors were millers in Germany) and his farm Klein Parys, which is stretched out for a Mile next to the Berg River outside Paarl.

Can’t wait for those warm Spring & Summer nights to begin so we can go back and enjoy the Sunset and amazing vibe at Zenith Skybar.

Radisson Blu – Saturday Supper Club

I’d heard so much about the Radisson Supper Club, Tobago’s Restaurant, I thought it was about time for me to see what all the fuss was about.

IMG_3871

It was an icy cold and blustery winters evening in the V&A Waterfront. Dinner was to be paired with the Jordan range of wines. Gary and Kathy Jordan have been making wine on the farm in Stellenbosch since 1993.

MENU

Asian Potstickers paired with Chameleon Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2014 and the Chameleon Sauvignon Blanc/Chardonnay 2016.

Lamb and Chorizo Hot Pot paired with the 2014 Jordan Black Magic Merlot.

Grilled Peach Tarte Tatin served with the delicious Millefera 2016

*-*

Canapés were the most delicious Asian Potstickers; I had to help myself to seconds, as well as onion soup served with Chameleon Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2014 and the Chameleon Sauvignon Blanc/Chardonnay 2016.

*-*

IMG_3804

*-*

IMG_3837

The starter was a delicious Potato and Leek Soup with sweet corn coriander fritter and crisp leeks. This course was most welcome considering the weather and was served with the Jordan Unoaked Chardonnay 2016. Personally I’ve never been a huge Chardonnay fan, but in time I’ve developed a taste for it, especially the unoaked variant.

*-*

The main course was a hearty Lamb and Chorizo Hot Pot, served with herbed cous cous and winter vegetables. I really liked this course, and the lamb and spicy chorizo sausage combination was excellent. This course was served with the 2014 Jordan Black Magic Merlot.

*-*

Dessert was the Grilled Peach Tarte Tatin, white chocolate mousse, dried peach leather and vanilla pod ice cream. This course was served with the delicious Millefera 2016

A lovely way to spend an evening with good food, wine and company.

Come Wine With Us – August 2017

I’ve wanted to try Burger and Lobster for some time, so I was delighted when it was to be the venue for this the latest installment in the Come Wine With Us series paired with Boland Cellars latest offerings.

IMG_3914

A unique and novel take on the proverbial “Surf and Turf”, with everything from the delicious breads, burgers to the delicious pickles all prepared and made in-house. I will concede that the menu didn’t inspire me at first glance, but I was prepared to go with it.

On arrival we were offered the Boland Cellar Talent and Terroir Rose. This wine is lovely and fruity which I quite enjoyed and is made using Cinsaut grapes.

MENU

Prawn Bisque Soup served with brioche

Lobster sandwich and burger combo

Ferrero Rocher dark chocolate mousse

*-*

The starter consisted of a Prawn Bisque Soup served with brioche. My goodness, I would have been satisfied with a large bowl of this course as it was superb. It had a deep rich intense seafood flavour that was an absolute hit will all in attendance. A five-star course. This course was served with the Boland Cellar Unwooded Chennin Blanc.

The main course was called “Best of both worlds” and consisted of a lobster sandwich and burger combo. Wow, was the lobster roll fantastic!! A lobster sandwich made with buttery fresh brioche and Japanese mayo, all of my favourites. The burger was made with 100% ground steak, bacon and homemade pickles served with fries and a green salad all of this served with Boland Cellar One Formation Shiraz, Pinotage and Ganache.

Finally, dessert was Ferrero Rocher dark cholate mousse served with Boland Cellar One Formation Shiraz, Grenache and Viognier.

Another amazing instalment of CWWU, there’s lots to be said for keeping your menus limited but doing it all really well and that’s the appeal of Burger and Lobster. A must do!

CHEF & THE VINE FEATURES HAMILTON RUSSELL

Having heard so much about Reuben’s from friends, I was quite looking forward to my first chef & the vine dining experience at Reuben’s.

This month we had the pleasure of Chef & the Vine Dinner with Hamilton Russel Vineyards

The trendy yet elegant décor set the tone for a formidable evening.

The four course meal yielded wonderful aromas, delicious tasting and beautifully plated food.

Hats off to the chefs who worked tirelessly to present such remarkable cuisine.

I really loved all the dishes but being a bit of a turophile, I delighted in the fourth course which was selection of cape cheeses with homemade crackers and preserves, paired with the Ashbourne Sandstone 2010, this was simply sublime.

IMG_3578

The wines from both Ashbourne & Hamilton Russell we sublime and ones we would gladly purchase 😉

We ended the evening with a selection of chocolates, which in opinion was a perfect ending to an impressive evening.
