We were quite filled after our starters and continued onto our mains which was well presented and very tasty from the Lily’s fried chicken and chips to the healthy just kept slimming option which tasted just as delicious. Portions were large and had us having to take a good break before our dessert.

Desserts were creatively presented and uniquely designed, it was enjoyable yet some of us had to do a take away.

 IMG_5158

The environment was very relaxed, but I think a bit too relaxed as we had to get our waiters attention more than once. Other than that, the decor and setting kept us captivated with a variety of textures.

Le Franschoek & Painted Wolf Wines Feb ’18 – Mario Arendse

This was my third visit to Le Franschoek; I love their Wine pairing dinners and was looking forward to their collaboration with Painted Wolf Wines. They offer wine pairing packages that include dinner, overnight accommodation and a buffet breakfast.

IMG_4430

There has been a change of Chef since my last visit so I was curious to try the fare on offer.

IMG_4388

IMG_4399

Our first course consisted of chilled Spanish gazpacho, grilled scallops and parmesan soufflé, a delicious course paired with a “Grenache Vintage 2013”

IMG_4413

Next were the lobster medallions, fennel mascarpone risotto and pine apple bisque. Wow, beautifully presented, perfect risotto and lovely lobster. This was served with “The Den Chenin Blanc”

IMG_4442

IMG_4462

This course was followed by the marinated crispy pork belly, caramelised pink fig, celeriac and asparagus mousse. I’m a lover of pork belly, so my opinion is a little subjective, but I felt the portion was a little small. This course was paired with the “Pinctus#2”

IMG_4477

The palate cleanser was the white chocolate and orange sorbet. It didn’t work for me, I don’t know I didn’t enjoy texture truth be told.

IMG_4483

The following course was the herb encrusted springbok loin, zucchini blossoms, pink peppercorn and olive jus. The springbok was very rare and some of the diners at our table sent theirs back as a result. I love venison but I thought this dish too rare and the herb crust didn’t work for me, that’s just my personal taste preference. This was served with the Painted Wolf Pinotage.

IMG_4499

Finally there were Peaches and cream semifreddo, poached peach and marzipan cream.  This was paired with “Pinctus#5”

The next morning, we made our way to breakfast at about 9am, it was already quite busy as the morning progressed and got steadily more frenetic. The staff seemed a little frazzled, I’m not sure if the number of diners was not anticipated, but the staff were quite literally falling over their feet. Twice the coffee I ordered was ice cold, and some of the guest waited nearly 10 minutes to get theirs.

There were some good elements, and I’m afraid some not so good elements during my stay. I will be back if only to see if there has been improvement

Morgenster Olive and Wine Tasting – Michelle Aanhuizen

Morgenster Wine and Olive Estate is located in Somerset West, a short drive just out of Cape Town. This farm has a rich history dating back to 1711 and produces beautiful wine and extra virgin olive oil.

IMG_5277

The farm is easy to find and surrounded by lush greens and beautiful views and the tasting room is light and welcoming and very well designed.

IMG_5288

Tastings

Olive Platter

R40 per person – five olive oils, balsamic vinegar, olive pastes and olives

Olive Oil and wine: R75 per person

Wine Tasting

Bordeaux: R50 per person – five Bordeaux-style wines from the winemaker’s monthly selection

Nu Series 1: R35 per person – five single cultivar wines

Italian: R40 per person – three wines, Caruso, Tosca and Nabucco, from the Italian Collection

Italian Collection wine and chocolate: R65 per person – Caruso, Tosca and Nabucco, paired with four handmade chocolates

I personally have not done olive oil tasting before – so this was new to me and our “wine expert” was knowledgeable and passionate who knew so much about the history of the farm, the wine and the olives. We tasted 5 different olive oils, balsamic vinegar, olive pastes and olives and by far the lemon olive oil was the best! This was a simple tasting but informative…with many “aha” moments.

IMG_5297

I felt the wine tasting was somewhat disappointing and almost rushed with less passion than the olive tasting… but the wine itself was good, we tasted a white wine, rose and two reds – of which one was a vintage… it was amazing even though my preference sits with white wine.

Overall this was a well put together tasting, simple and satisfying.

Fork Tapas and Pincho’s Bar – Jody & Nicole Brown

IMG_3809

A cosy little restaurant located in Long Street Cape Town, this restaurant has a sort of old pub style look and feel to it with its wooden floors and bare brick wall, it offers a downstairs and upstairs dining area with balcony seating as well. If you’re not one for large dishes and love sharing, then Fork is place to dine at.

IMG_3751

The menu is self-explanatory, with a vast variety of dishes to choose from and very well priced.

IMG_3757

Because it’s tapas style we could order a few dishes which were brought out to us as they were ready in the kitchen and with minimal waiting intervals.

Our favourite dishes were Grilled tiger prawns wrapped in bacon, it was so good we had to order another serving. Deep fried goat’s cheese with sun-dried tomato biscuit was a winner. Another one of our favourites were the Moroccan Lamb meat balls, this dish was served with fresh bread in very tasty tomato gravy. We were very surprised to see a flourless chocolate cake on the dessert menu but to our surprise it was a nice dense bite size cake served with cream that was very tasty.

IMG_3827

The ambiance in the restaurant was great, the waiter made sure that our glasses were always filled, with the drink of our choice, and the manager/owner was always around making sure that all the guests were comfortable and happy.

IMG_3839

The sharing concept is perfect for those who wanting to try more than one dish and it brings about a buzz and a conversation pieces.
